George T. Hebbel
P-47 Thunderbolt Pilot, WWII Veteran, Flew mission in German Occupied France, Instructor for Military Pilots.
In the fall of 1943, George T. Hebbel volunteered for the Army Air Corp and completed Flight Training at Pinellas Army Airfield in Florida.
George was then assigned to fly P-47 Thunderbolts with the 27th Fighter Bomber Group in Corsica to fly missions in German Occupied France and the European Theater.
On September 9th, 1944, while flying armed reconnaissance in the Alsace-Lorraine Region of occupied France he was shot down crashed and was able to elude German troops looking for him.
A sympathetic French family hid him in their house until they were able to make contact with the French Underground.
George was then able to travel through France, in disguise, through Switzerland, then Allied Occupied France and then back to his unit in Corsica.
George then was returned to the United State where he taught flying single engine airplanes to military pilots at Luke Field in Arizona.
George Hebbel was born in 1923 and sadly passed away in 2017 shortly after he was nominated for Induction into the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame.
